There are cities that reveal themselves immediately. San Miguel de Allende is not one of them.
Its true character lives behind walls, beyond courtyards, and just past the thresholds that line its cobblestone streets. The doors gathered in this work are more than architectural details; they are fragments of a collective portrait. Weathered by sun, marked by time, painted and repainted through generations, they bear witness to lives both ordinary and extraordinary.
Behind one door, a family recipe survives another century. Behind another, an artist wrestles with a blank canvas. Somewhere, a child takes their first steps across a tiled courtyard. Somewhere else, an aging couple shares an evening beneath the glow of a lantern.
We rarely see these stories. Yet their presence lingers.
Together, these doors form a visual archive of belonging—a record of the people, traditions, aspirations, and memories that have shaped San Miguel de Allende. Each doorway stands alone; collectively, they become something larger: the emotional architecture of a city.
What appears at first to be a study of entrances becomes, upon closer inspection, a meditation on what remains hidden, protected, and cherished.
Because the soul of a place is rarely found in its monuments.
It is found in the doors people come home to.
